Plain answer
Quality Score is Google's 1-to-10 rating of how relevant your keyword, ad, and landing page are to the person searching. It matters because Google charges relevant ads less for the same position — a higher score buys better placement at a lower cost per click.
How Quality Score actually works
Google grades three things per keyword. The 1–10 number you see1 is a diagnostic summary of those three verdicts:
- Expected click-through rate — will people click this? (see CTR)
- Ad relevance — does the ad match the search?
- Landing page experience — does the page deliver what the ad promised?
The business logic is simple: Google earns per click, so an ad twice as likely to be clicked can pay half as much per click and still make Google the same money. Relevance is literally a discount.
Does Quality Score really change what you pay?
Yes — your ad's rank is effectively your bid multiplied by your quality. A high-quality ad can sit above a higher bidder and pay less per click. The reverse is more painful: a poor score means paying a premium for worse positions, which is how two competitors on the same keyword can live in different economic realities.
Field note from TomasFor local businesses, Quality Score is how you outperform bigger-budget competitors intelligently. Bake seasonality and the local buying cycle into your structure and messaging, and relevance goes up; high relevance drives Quality Score and ad strength up, which drives your cost of traffic down. It's often the difference between position one and position two.
How do you improve Quality Score?
Tighten the triangle. Group keywords by one specific intent, write the ad to that intent using the searcher's own words, and send the click to a page about exactly that — not your homepage. Cut keywords whose searches you can't honestly serve; a keyword you can't be relevant for is a score (and money) drain forever.
What this means for your ads
Treat scores of 3 or 4 as an invoice for sloppiness — you're paying real dollars over list price. But don't chase 10s for their own sake; Quality Score is a means, not the goal. Fix the low scores on keywords that matter, and judge everything by cost per customer, not by grades.
