Plain answer
The Conversions API (CAPI) sends conversion data from your server straight to Meta, instead of relying on the browser pixel alone. Browsers and ad blockers increasingly strip pixel signals, so CAPI recovers conversions the pixel misses — which means better reporting and better optimization from the same ad budget.
How the Conversions API actually works
The Meta pixel reports from the browser: someone buys, the pixel fires, Meta hears about it — unless an ad blocker, a privacy setting, or an iOS prompt silences it first. CAPI reports the same event from your side, out of the first-party data you already hold: your website or store's server tells Meta directly that the sale happened, no browser in the middle1.
Run both and Meta deduplicates the overlap, keeping one record per event. The pixel catches the browsing context; the server catches the events the browser dropped. Most e-commerce and booking platforms now offer CAPI as a built-in integration, so "server-side" rarely means writing code anymore.
Why does missing data cost money?
Two ways:
- Your reporting undercounts — campaigns look worse than they are, and owners kill ads that were quietly working.
- The algorithm learns from fewer examples — Meta optimizes toward people who resemble your converters, so every unreported sale is a lesson it never got. Same budget, blunter targeting.
What this means for your ads
If you spend real money on Meta, run pixel plus CAPI — the platform's Event Match Quality score will tell you how much of your data is actually arriving. Before judging any campaign as a failure, check whether your conversion tracking is whole; a "losing" campaign with half its conversions unreported is a measurement problem wearing a performance costume.
